Waiting On America to Change
We all know how tough it is in the U.S. to have children. Whiel other countries have great maternity and paternity leaves, breastfeeding is promoted and accepted and children and families are part of the work/life balance. In the U.S. some of these things are not only hard to find, but near impossible.
When I was pregnant, before I knew E was getting transferred I wondered what I would do? Daycare for both of my children would have been upwards of $1000 a month in the town I was working. Where would I pump in my office building? I would have had to use a meeting room every day because I certainly was not using the ladies room.
I searched for jobs that I could apply for that had onsite daycare. They were easier to find in the NY/NJ area but I wondered about all the people who didn’t live near some of the largest company headquarters like I did.
If you are looking for what to do when you have to go back to work after you have your child, or where to find companies with on-site daycare, check out www.babiesatwork.org. They have a list of baby friendly companies, questions and answers and why more companies should be more family friendly.
Would you change jobs just to work at a more family or child friendly workplace?

Now that I’m pregnant with my second, day care costs are weighing very heavily on my mind. I’m very lucky to have a boss that is understanding and will work with me. It won’t take care of the day care cost, but he does what he can to give me a lot of flexibility in my schedule and even put a lock on my office door so that after I have the baby I can pump in privacy. I still complain because I would much rather be at home with my kids, but I really have it pretty good.
