Looking For The Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders are a group of disorders involving developmental problems in social skills and communication that vary widely in degree. ASDs are much more common than you might think.
ASDs appear as developmental delays, usually in social skills and language. The exact cause is unkown, although researchers agree it has to do with genetic factors that probably link with environmental factors.

Currently, the autism spectrum disorder category includes:
Autistic disorder (also called “classic” autism)
Asperger syndrome
Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (or atypical autism).
One factor to look for in your child is a lack of pleasure in sharing a common focus, like pointing our animals otr smiling when you do.
Other early signs can include that a child never minds being left alone, does not usually make eye contact, does not copy a sibling or parents facial expressions and tries to attract attension with minimal genstures or grunts.
If your child regresses, loses some previously known skill or interest (around 15-24 months), that is also a sign and you should bring the child into the doctor for a screening.

trying to identify these risk factors by questionaires and a history background will help you get a diagnoses as soon as possible. You want to try and make sure your child is developing normally because early intervention is key. Most children get diagnosed around age 4, but trying to get a diagnoses at age 2 will help tremendously.
