Cookbook Review, Deceptively Delicious
I was excited to review the new cookbook from Jessica Seinfeld, Deceptively Delicious, simple secrets to getting your kids eating good food. I couldn’t believe that this book would be any good, after all I bet she has a team of chefs cooking for her and her family. I was surprised by the extent of quality recipes and how well it was written.
When I first received the book the first thing I noticed what how much I liked the retro design and spiral bound cookbook. It is visually very appealing with colorful photographs and cute illustrations.
Basically, the book is about how to hide vegetables, fruits and healthier food into everyday meals. Do your kids like eggs? Then add cauliflower puree to it. If your children only want to eat chicken nuggets then make your own and add beet or spinach puree to it.
I have added or “hidden” vegetables in my children’s food before. I add a bag of frozen veggies if I make macaroni and cheese, if I make my own spaghetti sauce I blend in peppers, carrots and celery. I have my own tips to get picky eaters to eat. We have a rule in my house, eat what is on your plate and then you can be excused. I wonder if you are always hiding pureed food in your children’s food, when will they learn to actually eat fruits and vegetables?
I think this cookbook is great for people who don’t like to cook, the recipes are simple and kid friendly. Almost all the recipes are made with things I already had in my pantry which is a huge bonus for me. This book also has great ways to hide vegetables in desserts, where I can say I had never thought of hiding them. My kids and I made chocolate chip cookies complete with oats and whole chickpeas. I thought there was no way these could be good, I mean it had whole chickpeas in it!
They were very good and my kids devoured them. They are no more trouble to make then regular chocolate chip cookies (email me if you would like this recipe) and I will make them again. I am also going to make the greek dip with pureed chickpeas and artichokes on a regular basis for my kids because they love dipping raw veggies.
You can enter a sweepstakes to win your own copy and check out some samples of the recipes here.
So tell me would you buy this book for your family? Do you “hide” veggies in meals for your family?

I’d love a copy of the chickpea and choc chip recipe if you would send it to me! Our snack mom at the preschool where I teach brought these cookies (along with apples for good measure) for snack today. The kids were begging for seconds. We had to tell them, “only one cookie each”…come on, they all wanted more hidden chickpeas, that’s good stuff! Thanks so much, Beth

The recipe:
1c brown sugar
¾ c unsalted butter
2 large egg whites
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 (15 oz) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (aka garbanzo beans)
bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 cups all purpose flour
½ c old fashioned oats
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 t salt
Preheat oven to 350
Beat the sugar and butter until smooth
Beat in the egg whites and vanilla, then chickpeas and chocolate chips
Sift in flour, oats, baking soda and salt
Mix until dough forms and refrigerate for 30 minutes
Drop dough by the Tablespoon (I used my pampered chef cookie scoop)
Bake 11-13 minutes, careful not to overbake
Store in airtight container for up to 3 days
Makes 3 dozen
