Things To Do For A Long Car Ride

Friday, January 12th, 2007

All of my family and friends live aver an hour away from us. We often go up for visits and I try to schedule our drives for our twin’s nap time. That doesn’t always work out and I am always looking for things to do in the car.
I came across these cards. Each card has a picture printed on it of something you may see in your travels, a red car, a horse, the moon etc. You can keep score or just play for fun.

Better yet, make your own cards. Buy some large index cards and have the kids draw something they see on their travels. Then keep them in your car for your next long trip to keep the fighting and boredom at bay!

Bathing Basics

bathtub.jpg

If you are like me, you were terrified at the thought of giving your child their first bath. I Would only do it for the first few weeks if my mother-in-law or mother was there to advise and help. The first few were sponge type baths also because I feared the small baby tub.

Perhaps this will help some other new parents:

Things to Know:
Most experts say that newborns don’t need daily baths. Two or three baths a week is usually sufficient.

Until the umbilical cord falls off and the circumcision (if any) heals, stick with sponge baths to avoid infection.

It’s not really necessary to use soap on a newborn or young infant unless the weather has been very hot or he’s gotten especially dirty from spitting-up or a bowel movement. When you do use soap, use it toward the end of the bath, so the baby doesn’t sit too long in soapy water, which can dry out his skin.

Baby’s hair only needs to be washed once or twice a week. You can use mild baby soap or baby shampoo. If your baby doesn’t have much hair, a washcloth will work fine. As hair grows, keep a cup close by for rinsing (cradle his head in your hand and tilt it back as your rinse so water doesn’t run into his eyes).

Make sure the room where you bathe the baby is warm and draft-free.

If your baby hates being bathed in his tub, keep giving him sponge baths. But every few weeks be sure to try using the baby tub. If your baby dislikes being naked in the tub, try covering his back or belly with a wet washcloth as you bathe his other parts.

A baby should not be bathed in an adult bathtub until he can sit up on his own, usually at about six months of age.

The Dreaded Cold and Flu Season

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Cold and flu season are here again. Everyone I know here in NJ is sick or has kids that are sick. I am trying to prevent that in this house, especially because R has had a bad cold the last two Decembers.
That is not something I would like to repeat.

Here is what you can do to try and prevent those pesky germs to invade your body:

Make sure you wash your hands and your kids hands. Warm water, lots of soap, you know the drill!

Try and get an HEPA air filter. They range in price from $40-$120.00 but they can and do remove a lot of dust, pollen and dander from the air.

Open your windows and air out the house if you can. Here in NJ it has been so warm, I try to air the house out as much as I can.

Wipe down those toys and disinfect yoru phones, keyboards, remotes and light switches. Those are things you touch many, many times a day. Germs love them.

Try and limit playdates with your kids during this season, they might not be sick but their siblings or parents very well could be.

If you get sick change your toothbrush. I change my toothbrush head very often because those germs gross me out!

Wash your hands. Did I say that already? Because it is worth repeating.
Go!
Wash them right now.

Cradle Cap

Monday, November 27th, 2006

My daughter had cradle cap, it wasn’t the worse case I have ever seen, but the baby dandruff made me crazy.
Her brother didn’t have one little flake.

This is what I did to get rid of the pesky flakes. I put a couple of drops of baby oil on her head, then brushed away with a toothbrush. She hardly had any hair at all until she was two, so a comb was too rough for her but a baby toothbrush worked well.

Then once a week or so, after a bath I would leave a little oil on her head overnight. It cleared it up in a week. Every once in awhile it could come back but if I used the oil trick it went away every time.

Holiday Mom Tip

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Do you have lots of scraps or odd pieces of wrapping paper during the holidays like I do? I felt bad throwing it away (wrapping paper is expensive!) so I would roll it and put it somewhere but inevitably, it would get ripped or thrown away.

Now I tear the scraps of wrapping paper and use it as filler for gift bags. It looks festive and I don’t feel like I have wasted anything.

Mom Tip #2

Monday, November 20th, 2006

My kids love puzzles. My daughter has loved doing puzzles since she was two and my son has just started liking them a lot.
The problem? We have at least 20 puzzles with varying size pieces and they tend to get lost, or mixed up with other puzzles. Many of our puzzles didn’t come in boxes either.

I put the puzzle pieces in a ziplock container and write “Dora puzzle” or “United States” on the outside of the bad. Then I store the puzzle and the bag of pieces in the drawer or bookcase.
Now even if the bag is misplaced I still know what puzzle the pieces belong to.

Money Saving Tips

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

One of the first things I thought of when the shock of finding out we were having twins wore off, is that this is going to be expensive.

Whether you are having one two or (ouch) three babies saving some money can not hurt.

I recommend that all pregnant women and new mothers sign up at web sites like www.pampers.com

www.huggies.com

www.enfamil.com

www.gerber.com

Not only will they send you newsletters with tips, games and help, but they will also mail you coupons!

I also looked for freebie or coupons web sites to help me find the coupons or samples on the things all mothers need like baby soap, detergent and diaper rash cream.

If you have not already, join the pricing club at your local supermarket, they track the things you buy with your card and give you coupons accordingly.

Diapers seemed to take up the biggest part of my baby budget, so I tried all the different kids of diapers out there from generics to big name brands.

I would also check out www.amazon.com. From time to time they would have a huge sale on big boxes of diapers, I would stock up and get free shipping on my order of $25.00 or more.

What are your big money saving ideas for new parents?
